I began my academic career in 1971 at the Far-Eastern Polythechic Institute (Vladivostok, USSR), where I eventually became the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics.
In 1978, I received my PhD in fluid mechanics. In 1988, I began working at Institute of Cybernetics of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. I currently focus on wave and discontinuity propagation in solids rather than fluid mechanics because solid thermomechanics is now my primary scientific interest. .
I have published approximately 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals. I've visited many European universities (TU Berlin, Paris 6, University of Cambridge, University of Turin, University of Oslo, and TU Budapest). I was a member of the Nordic Association for Computational Mechanics' executive committee. I also belong to EUROMECH and ISIMM. In 2004, I was awarded the Estonian National Science Prize.
