I began my academic career in 1971 at Far Eastern State Technical University in Vladivostok, USSR, and then eventually became the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics.

In 1978, I earned my PhD in fluid mechanics. In 1988, I started working at the Institute of Cybernetics of the Estonian Academy of Sciences (now part of Tallinn Technical University). I am currently concentrating on wave and discontinuity propagation in solids rather than fluid mechanics because thermomechanics of solids is now my primary research interest.

I have published about 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals. I have visited several European universities, including TU Berlin, Paris 6, University of Cambridge, Sapienza Universita di Roma, Politecnico di Torino, University of Oslo, TU Budapest, Institute of Thermomechanics, Prague, as well as  Worchester Polytechnic Institute, and Bar-Ilan University. I was a member of the Nordic Association for Computational Mechanics' Executive Committee. I also belong to EUROMECH. In 2004, I was awarded the Estonian National Science Prize.
