TreeView is a phylogenetic tree viewing program written by Roderic D.M. Page. Previous versions of BioEdit included a distribution of the TreeView executable and supporting libraries in the apps folder. At the request of the author full TreeView installation is now distributed with BioEdit. This installation is contained within the file called TreeView.zip. To install TreeView, unzip the file to a temporary directory, then run the program called "setup.exe" which will be created. TreeView will install itself on your system. Accessory Programs that generate a phylogenetic tree as final output (such as dnaml and protpars) are configured by default to open the output automatically in TreeView, provided that TreeView is installed into the default install directory. If TreeView is installed in a different directory, then accessory apps must be reconfigured to point to the correct path. For more information about this, see Help (from the BioEdit Help->Contents menu) and browse to "Basic Analysis Tools", "External Accessories", "Adding and Configuring External Applications". Note: For Windows 7, 64-bit users, the version of TreeView distributed with BioEdit will not work correctly. Rod Page offers an updated version (TreeViewX) that does work well on this platform at http://darwin.zoology.gla.ac.uk/~rpage/treeviewx/download.html. (main site = http://darwin.zoology.gla.ac.uk/~rpage/treeviewx/) To install this version such that it works with pre-configured Phylip accessory apps within BioEdit, it is best to override the default installation directory when installing TreeViewX to C:\Program Files\Rod Page\TreeView You can then either 1.) Change the name of the file C:\Program Files\Rod Page\TreeView\tv.exe to C:\Program Files\Rod Page\TreeView\treev32.exe or 2.) modify accessory application configurations to point to C:\Program Files\Rod Page\TreeView\tv.exe.
